 Excerpt from 1963 Official Illinois State Highway Map  Construction
has not yet begun on Interstate 55 in Montgomery County in the early
60s, as this portion of the freeway was the last of 55 to be completed
in Illinois. At this point four-lane Route 66 carries traffic between Springfield and St. Louis, coming within a few yards of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Highways. Note the old two-lane alignments still noted on the map (in light blue) at Mount Olive and Staunton. Return to Directions Page |
